FREE! Our Families and Communities from the culture and industry of prison

FREE! Media Justice Project

Mainstream media portrays incarcerated people and our families as less than human, unintelligent, unorganized, and undesireable. This demonization of our communities fuels the economic, social and political disenfranchisement of low-income communities of color, oftentimes depicted as the embodiment of "the criminal".

FREE!'s Media Justice Project "Prison Famz Productions puts media-making tools in the hands of those most impacted by mass incarceration. We also fight to gain and maintain access to the technology and airwaves that are the vehicles for the content we produce.

FREE! is partnering with Manhattan Neighborhood Network, the Sound Gatherers' "Community Activist Roundtable", and other organizations and individuals to train our members in Television Production and Post Production, and in how to advocate against the "Digital Divide" that keeps our families and communities LOCKED OUT and LOCKED UP.

Our JUST Media Tech program also offers workforce development assistance by providing opportunities for formerly incarcerated, and "at risk" members to learn skills and tools of the technology trade, increasing their employment marketability.

FREE! is a Core Partner Organization in the local chapter of MAG-net, the nationwide Media Activist Grassroots Network, and is working to create a NYC based media justice hub where media activist organizations and individuals build power by sharing resources.
